Concerned Mayo residents seeking improved road junctions on busy N84

A Mayo TD has called for junction improvements on the N84 (Castlebar to Ballinrobe road) and particularly at Aghadrinagh just outside Castlebar.

The junction is the first outside Castlebar just 350 metres after the new N5 road project and improvement works should be done in tandem with this major €240 million infrastructural project.

Deputy Alan Dillon has been liaising with the residents of Aghadrinagh who themselves are seeking an improved junction onto the N84.

Deputy Dillon has called a wider range of improvements to a larger stretch of road along the N84 from Castlebar to Ballyheane.

He outlined: “I have requested that Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII) would consider making some improvements to the Aghadrinagh junction in conjunction with the N5 Westport to Turlough Road Project.

"TII has reviewed the design for the N5 Westport to Turlough project and can confirm that the nearest grade separated junction from the N84 to the N5 is 350 meters from this junction.

"While there are no plans at present to include these works, I welcome confirmation from Transport Infrastructure Ireland that an application has been received for the section of the N84 from the end of the N5 works at Aghadrinagh to Ballyheane.

“In light of the application to TII for the Castlebar to Ballyheane section of the N84, I am now seeking that these works would be approved and proceed before the opening of the new N5 road project.

"I especially know the junction at Aghadrinagh needs to be prioritised due to its immediate proximity to the new major road junction once it opens.

"There was already a particularly dangerous bend on a slope one side of the junction coming from the Ballinrobe direction and this will soon be hindered with accelerating traffic coming off the N5 from the Castlebar direction when the new N5 opens.”
