Greenway link in west Mayo to remain closed this summer

THE section of greenway in Westport from Allergan through Attireesh and on to Barley Hill will not be open this summer.

The clarity was given in an update to local councillors on the new N5 road works at the Westport end of the project.

Councillor Peter Flynn confessed he was a 'little disappointed' there was no reference in the report about the popular link, saying he had hoped to hear it would be back in action for this summer.

Ms. Marian McHugh from the Roads Design Office explained how the construction project had run into issues at a piled area in Attireesh. The ground was soft but there are also boulders, which are breaking the piles.

As a result there were delays and this section will not be done before summer, she said.

It will be next December at the earliest before it is opened.

There have been issues there, which is one of those unknowns on a project of this size, she explained.

Councillor Peter Flynn asked that there be some communication on this.

The tourism sector were expecting that section of greenway would be open for the summer.
