South Mayo in shock over deaths of two local people in Limerick crash

Communities in south Mayo are in mourning following a fatal road accident in Co. Limerick yesterday which claimed the lives of two popular and much-loved local personalities.

Brian Mullin, Cloghans Hill, Kilmaine, and Sharon Ryan, Carras, Hollymount, both aged in their 30s, died from injuries sustained when the car in which they were travelled was involved in a collision with a van on the N21 at Ballycarrane, Patrickswell.

They were pronounced dead at the scene, the accident having occurred at 9.25 p.m.

Their bodies were removed to University Hospital Limerick.

The tragic news has cast a dark shadow over the Kilmaine and Hollymount communities. Brian was an older brother of Mayo GAA star Oisín.

Local Councillor Patsy O’Brien extended his heartfelt sympathy to the two bereaved families.

He said the news had evoked a deep sense of shock and sadness.

Councillor Damian Ryan joined in paying condolences to the bereaved families who are widely known and respected in farming and GAA circles.

The occupants of the van, a man and woman in their 20s and a male infant, were taken to University Hospital Limerick for treatment but are believed to be uninjured at this time.

Meanwhile, gardaí are appealing to any person who may have witnessed the collision to contact them.
