Mayo club wins All-Ireland 7s football title

St. Brigid's of Mayo won the junior shield title at the currentaccount.ie All-Ireland Club 7s competition over the weekend.

The club, based in north Mayo, beat Muckalee of Kilkenny in the final on a scoreline of 3-6 to 1-5. It's a first All-Ireland title for the club.

St. Brigid's were joined by four other from the county at the tournament, which was hosted by Naomh Mearnóg and St. Sylvester’s in Dublin.

The other clubs from Mayo competing were Kilmovee Shamrocks (senior), Swinford/Killasser and Claremorris (intermediate), and Ballyhaunis (junior).

Galway's Kilkerrin-Clonberne made it an All-Ireland senior double at the event. Having captured the currentaccount.ie All-Ireland senior club title for the first time in the club’s history earlier this year, Kilkerrin-Clonberne won a third senior 7s title following previous wins in 2016 and 2014.

The senior shield honours went to Donaghmoyne from Monaghan, meanwhile, as they overcame the challenge of Offaly opponents Naomh Ciaran by 4-6 to 2-6.

Elsewhere, Parnells from London captured the intermediate cup following a 1-5 to 1-2 victory over Carrickedmond from Longford, while Galway’s Annaghdown landed the intermediate shield by overcoming Tyrone opponents Omagh St. Enda’s.

Leading up to the tournament, LGFA president Mícheál Naughton thanked the tournament sponsors for their commitment to the event and to the sport overall.

He said: “The Covid-19 pandemic meant that we could not hold our All-Ireland Club 7s in 2020 and 2021 but we’re back this year – and with a new sponsor in currentaccount.ie. They came on board with us during the pandemic in 2020, which was an incredible show of faith in ladies football and at a challenging time for sport and business.”
