Council responds to concerns over new N5 issues causing Mayo traffic problems

Mayo County Council has responded to concerns raised in respect of two issues relating to the new N5 between Turlough and Westport.

One related to traffic lights at the new Breaffy bridge, which is causing traffic congestion despite works not currently taking place there, and the one concerned the delayed reopening of the old access route and new overbridge to Islandeady.

A statement issued by the council outlined: "The contractor and NRO have confirmed that there will be lights on the N60 at Breafy until early to mid-October to enable the contractor to carry out the planned improvement works.

"We understand that the reason why there is no work taking place at the moment is that the contractor is awaiting a watermain connection.

"Once this is completed they will progress with the works.

" In relation to having the traffic lights removed if the contractor is not working at this location, and this would be considered a reasonable request in normal circumstances, the reality is that to do so would impact on road safety and so it’s something that the contractor will not be in a position to do.

"The lights are manned at peak hours and school times will be managed, priority is given to traffic going towards Castlebar in the morning and away from Castlebar in the afternoon/evening.

"In respect of the Islandeady overbridge the contractor has confirmed that they are awaiting part of the safety barrier which is expected early next week which, once erected, should then see the road opened by Friday, September 2."
