Efforts continuing to rescue man trapped in Mayo sea cave

AN operation is continuing in north Mayo this morning to rescue a man trapped in a sea cave.

Two people were caught in the cave, near Downpatrick Head, by rising waters yesterday evening, with one assisted to safety by a nearby kayaker.

Rescuers have been in visual contact with the man throughout the night, RTÉ have reported this morning.

A number of search and rescue teams are involved in the operation to bring the man to safety, including Ballyglass RNLI and the Irish Coast Guard.

Ballycastle Hall has been opened overnight, with use of toilet facilities for the emergency services personnel as well as tea, coffee and snacks.

The hall operators are appealing for food donations, for breakfast and lunch, if people could drop some into the hall, as well as volunteers to help serve food.
