Eye-catching new Mayo mural is unveiled

A collaborative mural project between Gaelscoil Raifteiri and TY students from Davitt College, Castlebar, has been unveiled.

The purpose of the project was to represent the history of the Fairgreen site at Gaelscoil Raifteirí.

Ms. Síle Hughes, an art teacher in Davitt College, who directed the project, said the students really enjoyed the creative process. They were eager to represent the ideas of Gaelscoil Raifteiri staff, parents and pupils successfully.

The result is a colourful and eye-catching mural. Niamh Uí Raois, principal, Gaelscoil Raifteiri, said the inspiration for the project came about last year when classes were set the task of exploring their local environment during a Green Flag action day.

The mural references the use of the Fairgreen as a venue for fairs, carnivals and circus’ in years gone by and as a centre of learning and fun through the medium of Irish that it is today.

Images of a cow grazing in a meadow, a sunrise, marquis, the galaxy, children at play and books are subtly woven together to create a magical tapestry which embodies the theme of ‘dóchas is grá’ - enduring hope and lifelong learning.

Congratulations to Davitt College TY students and Ms. Hughes on this amazing work of art.
