Issues at north Mayo cemeteries highlighted

ISSUES with two cemeteries in north Mayo have been raised at council level.

Fahy graveyard in Ballycroy is in an unusual situation where the road leading in to it is not a public road. It is in a poor state of repair.

Councillor Sean Carey said it is a council graveyard and the road should be taken in charge by the council, so improvement works can be done.

At Kilgalligan Cemetery, the voluntary committee there have applied for planning to extend the burial grounds. Now they had to carry out an environmental assessment and it was hard to find funding for that.

The council, said Councillor Carey, should be making these applications rather than a voluntary committee.

Chief executive Kevin Kelly said the position with graveyards overall needs to be looked at as there are capacity issues at a number of locations.
