Justin Healy scored two goals as Cill Chomáin beat Killala in today's TF Royal Hotel JFC A semi-final in Ballina.

Mayo junior football finalists determined on a day when conditions played their part

There was a reduced programme of games in the Mayo GAA football championships this afternoon due in part to the inclement weather conditions.

Just four games were scheduled to be played today in any event but one of them – the Egan Jewellers IFC semi-final between Kilmeena and Bohola Moy Davitts at Josie Munnelly Park, Castlebar – had to be postponed because of a waterlogged pitch. It has been rescheduled for 12 p.m. tomorrow in Islandeady.

The one intermediate game that survived some horrible conditions in north Mayo was the intermediate relegation final between Ardnaree and Lahardane in Crossmolina, and at the end of an entertaining affair it was the boys from Ballina who prevailed by one point, 1-11 to 1-10. It means Lahardane will be playing junior football in 2023.

The other games played were the two TF Royal Hotel JFC A semi-finals. Islandeady did just enough to see off Shrule/Glencorrib in Tourmakeady, winning by two points (0-13 to 0-11), but the real drama was in rain-soaked Ballina where Cill Chomáin and Killala put on a heck of a show.

The game needed extra-time to find a winner and at the end of it all, Cill Chomáin - last year's beaten finalists - held on to see off their north coast neighbours by 3-12 to 1-15, the goal that settled it being a penalty scored by Derek Moran right at the end of the first period of extra time.

The drama continues tomorrow with the two Connacht Gold SFC semi-finals featuring Ballina Stephenites against Ballintubber and Westport against Castlebar Mitchels as well as the relegation final between The Neale and Davitts, the aforementioned rearranged intermediate semi-final in addition to the other semi between Hollymount/Carramore and Ballyhaunis, and the two junior B semi-finals (Ballycastle v Achill and Ballycroy v Moygownagh).
