Wheelchairs improve accessibility on Mayo beaches

ACCESSIBILITY to Mayo beaches was improved over the summer with five beach wheelchairs in use.

Three are in Achill - two at Keel and one in Dugort, with one available at both Carrowniskey and Old Head.

Matting and ramp access were improved, with a new hand rail also installed at Carrowmore.

An update on improving accessibility was given by tourism officer Anna Connor at a meeting of Mayo County Council's tourism committee.

Achill Tourism have looked after booking arrangements for the wheelchairs on the island. At the other beaches, they are stored at the lifeguard huts and operate on a first come, first served basis during the season.

Ms. Connor said they were restricted by the width of some access ramps, and also with storage.

However, as part of a beach audit they will be looking at trying to leverage further funding.
