Final approval for sale of former Mayo county library building

THE sale of the old library building at Mountain View in Castlebar has been officially approved.

It went to a vote when it came before the full monthly meeting of Mayo County Council for final approval.

The sale was approved at a Castlebar Municipal District meeting with all but one member - Councillor Michael Kilcoyne - in favour.

He wanted a condition attached to the sale, that the site be developed by the purchaser within 12 months.

That proposal was put to a vote at the full council meeting this week and ultimately defeated, with four members voting in favour and five abstaining.

Ahead of the vote, Councillor Al McDonnell said additional conditions could not be applied to a sale at this stage. You either went with what was presented to the market or you don't.

Councillor Cyril Burke felt the timeframe suggested could not be met, with the need to go through planning and possibly An Bord Pleanála.

Ultimately the original resolution to approve the sale was carried, with Kilcoyne's amendment to attach the new condition defeated.
