Mayo's first affordable housing scheme welcomed

MAYO Fáil Senator Lisa Chambers has welcomed confirmation from her party colleague, the Minister for Housing, Darragh O'Brien, that 13 new affordable homes for Westport have been approval in principle.

The new homes will be delivered in 2024.

Welcoming the news, Senator Chambers said: “As a party and at the heart of Fianna Fáil is the belief and aspiration that everybody should have access to good quality homes, located in the right places, to purchase or rent at an affordable price. The Housing for All Plan puts us on the pathway to delivering that objective and to meeting the housing needs of all our people.

“The plan is working and I was delighted to receive confirmation from Minister Darragh O'Brien that Mayo’s first affordable scheme has been approved in principle.

“I understand that the price for a three-bed home will be in the region of €220,000, which is much lower than the current market rate. Prices in Westport have risen considerably in recent years, making it unaffordable for local people to purchase homes. This development seeks to address that issue.”

She added: “I want to thank local Councillor Brendan Mulroy for all his work to date on this.

“I look forward to seeing this project progress over the months ahead and seeing these fabulous homes delivered for families in Westport.”
