Councillor unhappy with response over Mayo bridge 'fault' claim

A Mayo elected representative is unhappy with the explanation he has received to concerns he raised over what is transpiring at the new bridge on the Lodge Road in Westport.

Councillor Brendan Mulroy highlighted his dissatisfaction yesterday over the fact that two lorries can't pass each other at the underpass, adding it was unsafe for pedestrians who will have to walk under the bridge.

He has been informed today by management of Mayo County Council that the carriageway under the bridge provides for two 3-metres traffic lanes and a 3-metre footpath/cycling lane and that "this is appropriate for a road where a 50kph speed limit exists."

Speaking to The Connaught Telegraph this evening, he explained: "I am not happy with this response as I feel, as do others, that the underpass is now a health and safety concern.

"I will keep highlighting this situation until we reach a satisfactory resolution."
