Green light for new homes on Mayo urban sites

PLANS for 10 new homes on the Pontoon Road in Castlebar have been approved by Mayo County Council.

The detached dwellings will be located at an existing development, Watersville.

No submissions were received by the council in relation to the development.

Another local housing project, for the construction of seven homes on the Turlough Road, has also been approved.

Original plans were for four townhouses and a two-storey apartment building, along with the demolition of an existing front façade wall of an old dwelling.

A number of submissions were received by planners, with issues including additional traffic at the junction of the Oaks housing estate, which could exacerbate an existing dangerous situation, and the impact on residential amenity and a break in the footpath serving the Oaks.

The entrance to the site would also result in the loss of two mature oak trees and would disrupt a green area that has benefitted from recent planting via a community initiative.

Following consultations amendments were made, with a revised layout plan that removed the apartments and replaced the townhouses.
