Dublin fight back to inflict defeat on Mayo

Having trailed by six points at one stage, Dublin fought back to beat Mayo by four in the end – 2-11 to 2-7 – in their LGFA Lidl National League Division 1 clash this evening.

Goals from Kate Sullivan and Caoimhe O’Connor helped the Dubs eke out a win that looked unlikely when Sinéad Walsh scored her second goal early in the second half of the game.

That put the westerners two goals up, but the Dublin response was clinical as they ground down their opponents with points before netting twice to swing things firmly in their favour.

Dublin could even afford to miss a penalty in the closing stages of the game at DCU St. Clare’s.

Mayo were 1-4 to 0-4 ahead at the break, Walsh's goal towards the end of the first quarter putting daylight between the sides.

It looked even better for Michael Moyles' charges when Walsh scored her and Mayo's second goal early in the new half, leaving the Green and Red with a six-point cushion (2-5 to 0-5).

With 10 minutes remaining the gap was down to four and when Hannah Tyrell teed up Kate Sullivan for a goal, the deficit was reduced to just one.

Dublin were level with four minutes to go and Tyrell's miss from the penalty spot on 58 minutes didn't knock Dublin off course as O'Connor soon finished a breakaway move to the Mayo net to put her side three ahead.

Tyrell converted a late free to put a little gloss on the final scoreline, leaving Dublin 2-11 to 2-7 winners.
