Mayo Young Sports Stars: Remarkable year in the ring for talented pugilist

Aghagower's Laura Moran had a remarkable 2022. The 18-year-old, who is currently studying for her Leaving Cert in Sacred Heart School, Westport, trains out of St. Anne’s Boxing Club and last April she won silver in the European Youth Championships in Bulgaria, followed by bronze at the World Youth Championships in Spain in November.

In addition, she claimed the All-Ireland Under 18 70kg champion at the IABA finals in the National Stadium last February.

Those facts alone make her a worthy winner of the boxing category in The Connaught Telegraph Mayo Young Sports Stars Award, and Laura's sporting talents don’t stop there.

She has played soccer and handball at a top-class level, was involved with the Mayo minor and senior ladies Gaelic football team last year, the Westport senior ladies team that reached the county senior semi-final and has helped Sacred Heart School to back-to-back Connacht Post Primary School Senior A football titles.

She will receive her award at The Connaught Telegraph Mayo Young Sports Stars of the Year 2022 ceremony this Friday in Breaffy House Resort, Castlebar.
