Westport Scoil Cheoil summer school 2023 is launched

WESTPORT Scoil Cheoil, the now renowned week-long Irish music summer school, is returning this July.

It was launched by sisters Kate and Sal Heneghan who reflected: “The reputation of this summer school has really grown and last year we had 300 participants - mostly local, but now we also attract music students from the University of Mozarteum, Austria, the University of Trieste, Italy, as well as students from the EEBIV School in Brussels.”

You can attend music classes year in, year out, explained Kate, but one does not make the transition to being a musician unless you can make the commitment to a summer school for a week. “It is transformative.”

Again this year they are delighted to continue to host a confined Scoil Cheoil - all entries have to be in by May 31.

Having a first-class masters in music composition and now being employed as a music specialist with Apple Music London, Kate has enviable contacts in the Irish traditional music world: this means she has drawn on the world’s leading Irish traditional musicians as tutors.

Classes run each day from 10 a.m. 'til 1 p.m. in Scoil Phádraig. Each evening there are sessions/concerts for the participants. Included in the €90 fee for the week is the fantastic tutor concert, which is sponsored by Knockranny House Hotel.

All participants host their own concert for parents and families on the last morning, showcasing the skills they have learnt over the week. Each evening there are sessions which cater for beginners through to advanced players.

All morning and evening activities come at the very reasonable price of €90 inclusive.

Scoil Cheoil is most certainly not exclusively for the experts or solely for children. For example, there are classes dedicated to adult only beginners on the tin-whistle and guitar, and, indeed, many adults come along with their children.

This is an ideal family event. For young and old, beginners or experts, Westport Scoil Cheoil is the place to be from July 10 to 14.
