Plan to give new lease of life to old Mayo grain store

AN old grain store in Ballina could be set for a new lease of life as a home.

Most recently the historical building, on the Downhill Road, has been used as a boxing gym.

Now, an application is before Mayo County Council for a change of use of the four-storey property, overlooking the Moy estuary, to create one residential unit.

The Old Grain Store was originally part of an important group of historical buildings clustered along the fast-running mill race associated with the Brusna river, documents submitted to the council set out.

Considering its historical importance, it was felt that maintaining the building in situ was more preferable than redeveloping the site.

The proposal put forward was respectful of its historical significance, it was submitted, and a positive means of achieving a housing requirement and removing a derelict building.
