Call to name a roundabout in honour of Castlebar Song Contest

A ROUNDABOUT on the new road in Castlebar should be named in honour of the Castlebar Song Contest.

The suggestion was put forward by committee member Tony Deffley at a meeting of Mayo County Council's Corporate, Education, Culture, Heritage and Library Services Policy Committee.

Castlebar Song Contest was a great community organisation and the naming would honour the people involved and highlight what a community can do, said Mr. Deffley.

Having previously raised the matter, he was told it would have to go to another group. But he was asking that it would be considered now with the new N5 opening.

He felt there was an opportunity to do this out of respect for those who did great voluntary work in the past.

Director of services Catherine McConnell said the naming of roundabouts is a matter for the municipal district.

They would be reminded that this has come up at committee level.
