Warm tributes to retired Mayo hospital medical staff member on his passing

The death has taken place of Dr. Aodan Bourke, Maryland, Castlebar.

A retired member of the medical staff of Mayo University Hospital, he died peacefully in the loving care of the staff of the Mercy University Hospital, Cork.

Aodan will be sadly missed by his loving wife Nuala, sons Johnny, Billy, Mark and Aodan, daughter Fionnuala, sons-in-law John and Richie, daughters-in-law: Jenni, Caroline and Antoinette, grandchildren: Cillian, Emily, Fiachra, Conor, Aaron, Michael, Cara, Eoghan and Georgia, to whom sympathy is tendered.

The Bourke family has extended thanks to the staff of the Mercy University and Mayo University hospitals for their care.

Paying tribute to the deceased, Noel Brett, a former manager of Mayo University Hospital, described the deceased as "a true gentleman, a man of huge integrity, vision, good humour and professionalism."

His tribute continued: "Aodan's vision and hard work over his decades at Mayo University Hospital shaped the practice of anaesthesia and critical care medicine not just in Mayo but nationally.

"Aodan was always generous with his time and gave freely of his advice which was always considered and wise.

"He was a calm influence in times of crisis. I will always be indebted to Aodan for his wisdom, advice and support when I worked at Mayo University Hospital.

"He advocated passionately for his patients, his medical colleagues, his theatre and ICU nursing colleagues, allied health professionals and support staff. May Aodan rest in peace."

Another lovely tribute to him on the condolences page of RIP.ie stated: "What a kind, gentle and unassuming man he was.

"His weekly visits to the patients in the Sacred Heart Hospital for many years with the local weekly newspapers was a testament to his strong social conscience.

"How the patients looked forward to his visits with his gentle demeanour and quiet comforting words."

His remains will reposing at his residence in Maryland, Castlebar (F23 R670) on Saturday from 4 to 6 p.m.

Removal from his residence take place on Sunday morning at 11 a.m to the Church of the Holy Rosary, Castlebar, for Requiem Mass at 12 noon.

Aodan will be laid to rest afterwards in the Old Cemetery, Castlebar.
