Mayo Sinn Féin selects second county town candidate for local elections

TONY Geraghty has been selected as Sinn Féin’s second Castlebar candidate for next year’s local elections.

Mayo party members gathered in numbers at the TF this weekend for the second Castlebar LEA selection convention.

Mr. Geraghty will join Donna Hyland on the election ticket for Mayo County Council in 2024 after she was selected for the party last month.

Said Mr. Geraghty: “As a passionate and committed community activist, I am delighted to be selected to run for election for Mayo County Council. With many years of experience in creating and supporting local jobs in Castlebar, I hope to bring that experience to the political arena.”

Tony has campaigned for decent mental health facilities and supports, adequate funding for education and the delivery of infrastructure that will encourage industry and jobs into the west of Ireland.

Living with his young family on the Breaffy Road in Castlebar, Tony is a proud member of Castlebar Chamber of Commerce and Breaffy GAA Club.

“With an understanding of the challenges and aspirations of our community, I am determined to be a strong advocate for positive change and effective representation,” he commented.

Tony has been a Sinn Féin activist for many years. He played a key role nationally for the party in the success at the last general election.

Speaking at the selection convention, he said: “I am grateful to the members of Castlebar Sinn Féin and Mayo Sinn Féin for their support. I am looking forward to the campaign ahead of us and to ensuring that sufficient Sinn Féin representatives are returned to Mayo County Council so that the concerns of ordinary people are heard.

“It is a priority in Castlebar that more housing is built. This should be public housing, affordable housing and more private housing.

“There is currently a severe shortage of suitable housing and it is causing unaffordable rents and ridiculously high house prices. We also have a growing homeless emergency in our county town. This in turn is feeding into the cost-of-living crisis, and causing a crisis for local families, local businesses, the public sector and industrial employment.”

Also speaking at the convention, Deputy Rose Conway-Walsh said: “We are delighted to add another strong candidate to the Castlebar local election ticket along with Donna Hyland. Sinn Féin in Castlebar is offering voters an opportunity for real change in next year’s council elections.

“I know that if they are elected, Tony Geraghty and Donna Hyland will make a significant difference to Mayo County Council and the constituents they serve. I look forward to joining them on the campaign in the months ahead.”
