Progress made on hazardous Mayo level crossing

A significant development concerning a hazardous level crossing in Mayo has been met with approval from local Mayo TD Alan Dillon.

Deputy Alan Dillon has been actively addressing concerns raised by residents and road users regarding the unmanned level crossing situated at Garryredmond, positioned between Ballyhaunis and Claremorris. This level crossing connects the N17 and the N60 through the L5551 route.

He expressed his concern following a serious incident at the crossing in early September, involving a collision between the main Dublin to Westport train and a car carrying two occupants who sustained serious injuries.

In response, Deputy Dillon strongly advocated for Iarnród Éireann (Irish Rail) to expedite plans for the upgrading of this crossing, with the aim of preventing any further incidents or collisions.

Iarnród Éireann responded to Deputy Dillon's concerns, informing him of a key development specifically at crossing XM190. This development involves the implementation of a Decision Support System (DSS), a novel train detection system that alerts road users with lights and audible warnings when a train is approaching.

Deputy Dillon said: ”Iarnród Éireann has already deployed these systems at 41 level crossings across the country. I can now confirm that this system will become operational before the year's end, with the initial pole and light infrastructure already installed, and discussions with the ESB are ongoing to provide the necessary power for system operation.”

The Castlebar-based TD added that this system will effectively enhance warnings to road users, ultimately reducing risks for all concerned parties. He highlighted that as the project progresses and the system becomes operational, Iarnród Éireann staff will be present at the crossing to engage with local users, providing guidance on system operation.
