Funding granted for Killala Bay reef project in Mayo

Local Fianna Fáil Minister Dara Calleary has welcomed €50,000 in funding for the Killala Bay reef project under the government's rural development policy.

Minister Calleary said: “I was delighted to receive confirmation that €50,000 in funding has been awarded to this project under the Outdoor Recreation Infrastructure Scheme. This funding will go some way towards the creation of Ireland's first underwater artificial reef in Killala Bay and the associated environmental planning costs.

“The funding, under the government’s rural development policy, Our Rural Future, aims to support preparatory work required to bring large scale outdoor recreation projects to a shovel-ready stage.

“Once at a shovel ready stage, it is my understanding that they will be in a position to secure further funding through the other measures of the Outdoor Recreation Infrastructure Scheme.”

Deputy Calleary said the allocation demonstrates the government's commitment to rural Ireland, and stated that Fianna Fáil in government will continue to ensure our local communities receive investment.

He concluded: “This investment is key to enhancing our outdoor amenities and, once completed, will also provide a major boost to the local economy by attracting visitors and furthering our reputation as a destination for tourism.

“I would like to thank Councillor Michael Loftus for his tireless work and effort in advancing this project to where it is today.”
