Death in Massachusetts of Mayo man Charlie Guthrie

The death has taken place in Quincy, Massachusetts, of Charles L. (Charlie) Guthrie, a native of McHale Road, Castlebar.

Aged 78, he was a member of one of the county town’s best known and most respected families and was a brother of former town councillor Kevin Guthrie.

A son of the late Thomas and Margaret Guthrie, he resided in America since 1987 and he worked for the commuter rail service for 23 years before his retirement.

He always maintained a keen interest is his home place and news of his passing is deeply regretted in Castlebar.

Charlie worked as a member of the staff of Kelly’s Barber Shop, Castle Street, Castlebar, for a number of years.

He is survived by his wife of 32 years, Patricia (née Reidy), Quincy, son Brian Guthrie and his wife Luisa, daughter Mary and her partner Neil.

He is also mourned by grandchildren Daniel Guthrie and Katherine Guthrie, brothers Kevin (Castlebar) and John (UK), sister Ann Goldrick (Charlestown), sisters-in-law Kathleen and Pam, brother-in-law John, nieces, nephews, relatives and a wide circle of friends.

Deepest sympathy is extended to the Guthrie family on their loss.

Charlie was also predeceased by his sister Mary Cosgrove and brothers Paudge, Tom, Mickey, Brendan and Brian.

His funeral Mass takes place in St. Ann’s Church, Quincy, on Friday next, February 16.

Charlie will be laid to rest afterwards in St. Joseph’s Cemetery, West Roxbury.
