Alley leading to White Horse Lane in Castlebar.

Investigation urged on possible pyrite issue at Mayo county town estate

AN urgent response is needed to a possible pyrite issue at a housing development in Castlebar.

Of immediate concern is a high wall along an access route to White Horse Lane, where a number of boundary walls have already been blown down.

The issue was highlighted at a Castlebar Municipal District meeting this week by Councillor Ger Deere who said there appears to be an issue with pyrite.

Boundary walls were blown down in the storm and a few houses are being tested, he explained.

The alleyway leading to the Turlough Road is high and Councillor Deere said he wants it tested.

Until then, close it off as a health and safety risk, he told management.

Councillor Michael Kilcoyne agreed that the matter requires urgent attention, saying it is important these people are given every assistance in diagnosing whether there is a problem with pyrite or not.

Management indicated the matter will be examined.
