Passing of founder editor of the Bohola Post in Mayo

The death has occurred of Pádraic Filan, Saint Colman's Villa, Rathruane, Bohola.

A former member of the teaching staff of St. Gerald's College, Castlebar, and an avid promoter of the Irish language, his passing is deeply mourned in the community.

He was founder editor of the Bohola Post and was honoured for his considerable contribution to the publication at its 50th anniversary celebrations last year.

A tribute to Pádraic on the Bohola Post Facebook page stated: "The Bohola Post is truly saddened to learn of the death of one of our founders, contributors, mentors, organisers, promotors and friends, Pádraic Filan.

"We extend our sincere sympathy to his sister Thérèse, nephews Pat, Jimmy, John, Paul, Fergal, Cíarán, Kevin, Seán, nieces, Deirdre, Joan, Catherine, Oonagh, Sinéad, Mary and his grand-nephews and grand-nieces.

"Just over 51 years ago a conversation involving Pádraic and the late Fr. Paddy Kilcoyne was the genesis of the Bohola Post.

"We were delighted last August to have Pádraic present at the launch of the 50th Commemorative edition.

"Over the years he wrote for our publication and ensured it reached the four corners of the world.

"It is fair to say without him, we would not be here today.

"We hope that in another place this evening he is with his comrades and friends from the early days of the Bohola Post reviewing it, and all that has gone on in Bohola over the years.

"He was a gentleman and a scholar. Suaimhneas síoraí dá anam."

Predeceased by his parents Cáit and Pat Filan and brothers Séamus and Peter, Pádraic will be very sadly missed and fondly remembered by his loving sister Thérèse, nephews Pat, Jimmy, John, Paul, Fergal, Cíarán, Kevin and Seán and by his nieces, Deirdre, Joan, Catherine. Oonagh, Sinéad, and Mary.

He will also be fondly remembered by his grand-nephews and grand-nieces and his colleagues at Saint Gerald’s College, Castlebar.
