Mayo book of condolence opens for Charlie Bird

A BOOK of condolence for Charlie Bird will open in Westport today.

The book will be available to sign in Westport Town Hall from 12 midday for people who wish to express sympathy to the Bird family on the passing of Charlie.

Charlie made many friends in the Westport area in the run up to and after his Climb With Charlie fundraising event on Croagh Patrick, making numerous visits to the area.

Tributes have been pouring in for the RTÉ journalist, who died on Monday, and who was really taken into the hearts of the Irish people in his public battle with motor neurone disease and charity work.

Westport Councillor Brendan Mulroy described Charlie as 'an inspirational figure'.

Westport House, where Charlie visited with wife Claire and their dog Tiger, in a tribute, described Charlie as 'a truly inspiring human whose life was a testament to dignity, courage, and the power of friendship'.

The tribute added: 'Charlie's indomitable spirit, his unwavering courage in the face of adversity, and his boundless warmth touched the hearts of everyone he met. He taught us the value of living with dignity, embracing each moment with passion and grace, and fighting for what is right with relentless determination.

'The friendship forged with Charlie has left an indelible mark on us all. His legacy of compassion, resilience, and the joy will continue to inspire and guide us.'

A service to celebrate Charlie's life will be held on Thursday at 12 noon in the Round Room, Mansion House, Dublin.
