Funding boost to promote physical activity among older people in Mayo

Over 60 communities around Mayo will benefit from €16,210 in funding for groups and organisations which provide opportunities for older people to get involved in sport and physical activity.

The news has been welcomed by Minister of Stare Alan Dillon and Deputy Michael Ring.

Minister Dillon said: “This grant aims to create an Ireland where older people can be more active and more connected.

"Important groups and organisations like Active Retirement Groups, ICAs, Men’s/Women’s Sheds, Physical Activity Leaders (PALs), care settings and other sports and social groups all over Ireland will benefit from over €300,000 in support for their sport and physical activities.

‘Every year approximately 32,000 older people around the country take part in physical activity funded by the Active National Grant Scheme.

"The funding allows older people in our communities access a diverse range of activities such as, aqua aerobics, rowing, dancing, cycling, clay pigeon shooting, bowling, self-defence, walking tennis, tai chi, walking and weight-lifting.”

Deputy Ring said: “The Age & Opportunity Active National Grant Scheme has been a very useful resource.

"It has resulted in older people becoming more active. This funding again highlights the government’s commitment to older people and the benefit of sport and physical activity in the lives of older people.

“The National Grant Scheme provides an accessible and enjoyable means for older people in communities nationwide to reap the health rewards from doing physical activity”.
