Tribute to Jimmy Foy, great Mayo character

THE death has taken place in Dublin of Jimmy Foy, formerly of 111 McHale Road, Castlebar.

Son of the late James and Martha Foy (née Ainsworth), Jimmy was a painter by profession, a gifted craftsman.

Jimmy was a great character, full of good natured devilment with a heart of gold.

I was privileged to have Jimmy as a boyhood pal. Our friendship grew over the years.

We enjoyed each other’s company and often recalled our days growing up in McHale Road, hunting rabbits in Brownes of Breaffy and swimming in Saleen lake.

In later years Jimmy had a deep interest in horse racing, he liked the occasional bet on the nags.

Some years ago he pulled off a major betting coup when he backed a number of winners ridden by Lester Piggott.

Most of all, Jimmy Foy was a kind person who loved to meet people, recalling past times when he was growing up In McHale Road. I will miss him. Rest in peace, old pal, you were one of the best,

Jimmy’s wife Nuala died some years ago and he is survived by his family and grandchildren.

He was brother of Joe Foy, Knockthomas, Castlebar, a superb goalkeeper in his day.

I extend my sympathy to his relatives. They have lost a good and loyal man who will be remembered by all with much affection.
