Daughter of Mayo woman called up to Ireland Nations League squad

Charlton Athletic midfielder Melisa Filis has received her inaugural call-up to the Republic of Ireland Women's National Team. The announcement comes as the team prepares to face Turkey in the UEFA Nations League at Tallaght Stadium on Friday, February 21.

Filis, who came through the ranks at Arsenal but no plys her trade in the second tier of the game in England with the Addicks.

Born in Luton, Filis qualifies to represent Ireland through her Knock-born mother.

Her inclusion in the national squad shows the depth of talent available to new head coach Carla Ward, who has taken the helm following a series of retirements and injuries within the team. “Melisa offers something different, she’s front-footed and she’s aggressive,” the new Ireland manager stated.

The upcoming match against Turkey marks the beginning of Ireland's UEFA Nations League campaign. The team aims to secure top position in their group, which also includes Slovenia and Greece, to qualify for League A ahead of the 2027 FIFA Women's World Cup qualifier.
