Mayo minister in key engagement over proposed Ballyhaunis IPAS facility
Mayo TD and Minister of State, Alan Dillon, has contacted the Minister for Migration, Colm Brophy, seeking clarification on the government’s current policy regarding the delivery of new commercial IPAS centres, and specifically the status of the proposed development in Ballyhaunis.
The renewed planning application submitted to Mayo County Council by Bridgestock Limited proposes the expansion of asylum seeker accommodation at the Old Convent Accommodation Centre in Ballyhaunis.
Minister Dillon acknowledged the concerns raised by Ballyhaunis Chamber of Commerce and the wider community.
“Ballyhaunis has a proud tradition of welcoming people from all backgrounds, but the community has made clear that local services are now stretched to capacity.”
Minister Dillon reiterated his commitment to ensuring that any decisions made are fair, transparent, and reflect the capacity and needs of local communities.
“I will continue to advocate for balanced regional planning and ensure that Ballyhaunis is not unfairly burdened without the necessary supports in place.”
He said he will remain in close contact with local stakeholders, Councillor Alma Gallagher and government colleagues as this matter progresses.
