Novice Mayo motorist arrested for driving at 161km/h on the N5

The Mayo Roads Policing Unit has arrested a novice motorist driving at 161km/h in a 100km/h zone on the N5 near Charlestown.

The driver was charged with dangerous driving at the scene last night and now faces:

* A two-year driving disqualification.

* A fine of up to €5,000 or up to six months in prison.

A garda spokesperson stated: "We remind drivers that speeding at this level puts everyone on the road at risk.

"Motorists are asked to take extra care on the roads and give more time for the journey ahead."
