Focus back on need for suitable circus site in Mayo county town
THE need for a suitable site for the circus in Castlebar is back in focus as the circus comes to town again.
It's taking place next week at a site in Milebush, which has previously been called into question for being unsuitable.
Councillor Ger Deere has again called for an alternative, safer site to be identified to keep the circus tradition alive and thriving in Castlebar.
Posters for the circus went up at the weekend.
Councillor Deere said it's a serious issue at Milebush, with the site in question 'totally unsuitable' for events such as the circus and carnivals.
He has suggested a number of alternative sites to the council.
Said Councillor Deere: “We have to find an alternative, proper site in Castlebar. We've always had the tradition of the circus and carnival in town.
“This matter is going on a long time and there's an onus on us as a council to find a site that can be used.
“I'd hate to see the tradition of the circus or carnival being lost to the town.”
The circus is planning to operate in Castlebar from March 11 to 17 and the council is working with the operators to try and find an alternative site to accommodate it.
This positive news has been welcomed by Councillor Deere who thanked MD head David Mellett for his work on the matter.
