Tenders published for Mayo pier works

THE Minister for Rural and Community Development and the Gaeltacht, Dara Calleary, has welcomed the publication yesterday of a request for tenders by Mayo County Council seeking contractors to undertake emergency repair works at Roonagh pier in west Mayo.

Roonagh pier is the mainland hub for daily ferry services to and from Clare Island and Inishturk.

The outer section of the pier has been closed since the end of October as a precautionary measure due to damage sustained by the underwater structures.

Further surveys have been carried out by consultant engineers on behalf of Mayo County Council to ascertain the extent of damage and identify emergency works to be undertaken to strengthen and protect the existing structure.

Said Minister Calleary: “I welcome the publication of the tender request for these essential works at Roonagh pier, which will ensure safe access for the island communities on Clare Island and Inishturk.

“My department is supporting Mayo County Council and working closely with local stakeholders, including ferry operators and the island communities, to ensure access is maintained at all times and that the emergency repair works are carried out without delay.”
