Man jailed for three months for Mayo theft and drug offences

A MAN has been sentenced to three months in prison after appearing before Judge Vincent Deane at Castlebar District Court.

Dylan Sweeney, 134 Parkmore, Tuam, Co. Galway, faced a number of charges including theft, drug possession and obstruction of gardaí.

The court heard that on November 15, 2024, Sweeney entered Mace on the Castlebar Road, Ballinrobe, where a shop assistant confronted him.

He left the premises with a bottle of vodka valued at €25. The property was not recovered.

On two separate Section 3 charges under the Misuse of Drugs Act, Sweeney was found in possession of small quantities of cannabis.

He also faced a charge of obstruction under Section 21 of the Misuse of Drugs Act arising from an incident on September 22, 2023, in which he provided a false name and address to gardaí during a search.

A small quantity of cocaine and Zimovane tablets were also found during the search.

The court was told Sweeney had 13 previous convictions.

His solicitor Gary Mulchrone told Judge Deane that Sweeney was a young man who had recently married, with his wife present in court in support of him.

Judge Deane sentenced Sweeney to three months in prison.
