Young SVP youth day to take place in Mayo

Transition Year students from secondary schools across Galway, Mayo, and Roscommon will come together on Thursday, April 16, for the annual Young St. Vincent de Paul Youth Day, taking place in the TF Royal Hotel, Castlebar. The event will run from 10.30 a.m. to 2.30 p.m.

The event will celebrate the inspiring work of students involved in the Young SVP programme, which empowers young people to take action on social justice issues in their communities. Throughout the day, students will showcase a wide range of projects focused on tackling poverty, supporting vulnerable people, and raising awareness of key social issues.

The youth day will feature a vibrant programme of performances, panel discussions, and interactive activities, giving young people a platform to share their experiences and highlight the positive impact they are making across the west region.

A key highlight of the day will be the ‘Future Fashion’ show, where students will present innovative, runway-ready outfits created entirely from discarded textiles from the St. Vincent de Paul shops. The competition challenges young people to think critically about fast fashion and sustainability and transforming materials that would otherwise go to waste into creative and meaningful designs.

This unique fashion showcase reflects the theme of environmental responsibility, while celebrating the creativity, talent, and social awareness of young people in the region.

Speaking ahead of the event, Helen Ralph the Youth Development Officer, West Region said:

“This day is all about recognising and celebrating the incredible work young people are doing in their communities. From social action projects to creative initiatives like ‘Future Fashion’, these students are leading the way in building a more just and compassionate society.”
