Concern about space running out in Mayo cemetery
THERE is local concern that space is running out in Islandeady Cemetery for families to bury their loved ones.
There are just nine double plots available at the burial grounds, and councillors have brought community concerns to the attention of council management.
Councillor Harry Barrett, at the monthly meeting of Mayo County Council, said space is running out in the cemetery. And Councillor Michael Kilcoyne also requested an update, highlighting how there are just two half lines left.
The members were told site selection is taking place to identify additional lands in Islandeady.
The council is carrying out site selection for four cemeteries in total in the county - Bonniconlon, Islandeady, Moyne and Kilmeena.
Also around the county, Kilgalligan, Mayo Abbey and Ballycroy burial grounds are currently at construction stage.
Works at Bohola and Keelogues burial grounds are at tender stage, while works at Murrisk are at the planning stage.
