HIQA inspection report on Mayo nursing home largely positive

HSE West and North West has welcomed the publication of the Health Information and Quality Authority (HIQA) report following its unannounced inspection of the Áras Deirbhle community nursing unit in Belmullet on November 13 last.

Áras Deirbhle, managed by the Health Service Executive (HSE), is registered to provide care for up to 30 residents requiring long- and short-term care. The community nursing unit consists of seven twin bedrooms and sixteen single bedrooms. Communal facilities include a dining/day room, oratory, visitors' room, hairdressing salon, and an internal courtyard.

HIQA's inspector observed interactions between staff and residents to be kind and respectful with a friendly, relaxed, and calm atmosphere throughout. Overall, the inspector found the premises were well laid out to meet the needs of the residents and to encourage and aid residents' independence.

Residents who spoke with the inspector were very complimentary about the staff in the centre with one resident saying, “It’s not home, but I’m happy here, I’m well looked after” while another said, “staff are lovely and very kind to me”.

Staff demonstrated strong familiarity with residents and their individual needs, and there was good access to GP and a range of specialist medical and health services, including physiotherapy, dietetics and speech and language therapy.

Of the 13 regulations assessed, six were compliant, four were not compliant and three were substantially compliant, indicating a high level of compliance with some areas requiring further improvement.

A compliance plan to address the non-compliant and substantially compliant judgements has been returned to HIQA outlining a number of actions undertaken to bring the Áras Deirbhle Community Nursing Unit to full compliance:

Refresher training for staff as identified in the report.

A directory of residents is now held in the centre with staff files and fire safety records now accessible in the centre.

The audit process is being reviewed and strengthened to ensure the deficiencies identified are addressed.

That consultations with residents and significant others are more comprehensively documented as part of the ongoing review of care plans of residents.

The HSE said it remains committed to ensuring the delivery of high-quality, person-centred care to residents at Áras Deirbhle Community Nursing Unit.
