Works progressing on Mayo coastal walk
Minister for Rural and Community Development and the Gaeltacht Dara Calleary has welcomed confirmation that works are progressing on the Céide Coastal Walk that will link the Céide Fields to Downpatrick Head in what has been described a ‘game-changing’ project for north Mayo.
“I am pleased to note that the tourism section of Mayo County Council continues to liaise with the local group, Céide Coast Community CLG, in progressing this project that will create a unique game-changing coastal trail linking Downpatrick Head to the historic Céide Fields.
“With funding of €200,000 from my Department of Rural and Community Development and the Galetacht’s Outdoor Recreational Investment Scheme (ORIS), a number of key initiatives are presently underway.
“This tranche of funding is bringing approximately 50 per-cent of the proposed trail into compliance with a previous Sport Ireland audit, thereby enabling it to be insured and formally listed as part of Sport Ireland’s recognised trail network. Trail surface works, safety and agricultural fencing, safety signage, way markers and trail head signage are presently being erected. Also, culverts and crossings required at open drains are being examined and made safe and safety equipment (lifebuoys) are being installed, with the timeline for completion of this programme of works being July of this year,” he said.
“I will be continuing to work with Céide Coast Community CLG, Mayo County Council and the community, to further advance the overall project which is a truly stunning walking route that holds unbridled potential for Ballycastle and the north Mayo region. I want to thank the local landowners, local authority and Céide Coast Community for their work and co-operation to date, and look forward with enthusiasm to the complete project being finalised, opened, and enjoyed by locals and visitors alike,” concluded Minister Calleary.
