€17,892 for Mayo playground refurbishment

FUNDING of €17,892 has been confirmed for the refurbishment of the playground in Murrisk.

Welcoming the announcement under the Capital Grants for Play and Recreation, Deputy Keira Keogh said: “This has been a long time coming and will see a positive impact for the children and their families that use this playground.”

The scheme supports the work of local authorities in improving access to quality play and recreation facilities within their communities.

“Many of the funded projects this year are focused on inclusion and access, which is very important, however I know there are many playgrounds within County Mayo that need refurbishment and upgrading works,” said Deputy Keogh. “I have been working with parents, community groups and Mayo County Council to address these issues.”

She added: “Evidence tells us how critical play is to a child’s development and mental health. As a behavioural psychologist and chair of the Oireachtas Committee on Children and Equality, I know that access to safe, inclusive play spaces shapes a child’s confidence, relationships and sense of belonging, and I will continue to push for further funding for playground upgrades, particularly in Louisburgh, Aughagower and Westport where they are badly needed.”
