Progress on east Mayo swimming pool facility investment

Minister of State Alan Dillon TD has welcomed the news that the redevelopment of the entrance to Charlestown Swimming Pool has gone to tender, marking a significant milestone for one of Mayo’s most valued community amenities.

This follows the allocation of €45,000 in CLÁR funding to upgrade the entrance, improve the walkway, and install new fencing along the river, strengthening access and safety at the facility.

Minister Dillon said the tender will deliver improved recreational infrastructure for Charlestown and the wider East Mayo community.

“This investment will ensure that a much‑loved local amenity, with over five decades of history, continues to serve families, swimmers and volunteers for generations to come.”

The tender includes a wide range of construction and civil engineering works that will significantly enhance access, safety, and the overall layout of the pool and surrounding area.

Minister Dillon praised the volunteer committee for their long‑standing commitment.

He said: “Charlestown Swimming Pool is a testament to community spirit. For over 50 years, volunteers have kept this facility alive, offering a safe, welcoming and affordable place for families.

"This investment recognises that dedication and ensures the pool remains a centrepiece of local recreation.”

Minister Dillon added: “This project is exactly what the CLÁR Programme is designed to support, rural communities coming together to protect and enhance vital local amenities. I look forward to seeing construction progress once the tender process is complete.”
