Mayo councillor lauds 'incredible support' during his cancer treatment

Mayo Fine Gael Councillor Ger Deere has issued a heartfelt thanks to everybody who supported him over the past six weeks of his cancer treatment.

The Castlebar-based representative shared a post to his Facebook page under a photograph of him ringing a symbolic bell put in place for recovering patients at Cancer Care West in Galway.

A message alongside the bell at the facility reads: "Ring this bell three times well, its toll to clearly say my treatment is done, this course is run and I am on my way."

His own words which accompany his Facebook image are: "Six weeks ago, today seemed so far away.

"It was impossible to imagine at that time about ringing this bell.

"But I did that today.

"It was a long road. A journey I never imagined that I’d be facing.

"But I got to today and I got here because of the incredible support I received since day one.

"It would be impossible to thank everyone and I’m afraid I may leave someone out.

"But I will be forever grateful to the incredible people who sent messages, wrote cards, said prayers, posted letters, lit candles and got in touch some way.

"That support got me through this.

"The medical staff are incredible and we are blessed to have these amazing people working within our system.

"To my family and friends who were always there with help, lifts, constantly keeping life going outside.

"Finally to Pauline. She has been a rock. A rock that was solid and immovable.

"She was there every minute of the journey with me and never let the situation beat us.

"She faced everything with me and never left me alone. I am truly grateful.

"I will never forget you all for your support and see you soon."
