Works underway on extending footpath along busy Mayo roadway

Works have got underway on extending the footpath at the old Westport Road in Castlebar to Cosgrove's Garage.

It will continue in the townlands of Ballynaboll South and Ballymacragh until Tuesday, May 12, from 8 a.m. to 4.30 p.m. daily.

Traffic lights will be in operation, so motorists can expect delays.

Emergency vehicles will be accommodated.

Local access will be provided for residents but there may be some delays.

Councillor Donna Sheridan said she had been campaigning for this footpath extension for many years.

"This phase will provide a safe and accessible pathway to Cosgroves, with plans to develop a dust path and extend the route further to Shaw's Garden Centre next year.

"This is a very positive development for the area and will be a great additional amenity for the many people who live along the Westport Road.

"Improving connectivity and creating safer walking routes has been a key priority, and I am pleased to see this important project progressing."
