Mayo Outdoor Recreation Plan 2026-2030 officially launched
The Mayo Outdoor Recreation Plan 2026-2030 was officially launched by Minister for Rural and Community Development and the Gaeltacht Dara Calleary TD in Kennedy Glasgow House, Ballina.
Based on the National Outdoor Recreation Strategy, this countywide multi-stakeholder plan sets out 20 actions, with the overall vision of having more people participating in and enjoying outdoor recreation responsibly.
The plan aims to provide coordinated leadership through shared objectives and strategic partnerships to maximise the potential of Mayo’s outdoors in balance with nature.
Speaking at the launch minister Calleary said: “I was delighted to provide funding through the Department of Rural and Community Development and the Gaeltacht to support the development of the County Mayo Outdoor Recreation Plan.
“County Mayo truly has some of the most scenic and unspoilt landscapes in the country. By working together, in collaboration with landowners and communities, we can ensure responsible and sustainable access to those landscapes while protecting the environment for future generations.
“I want to congratulate the County Outdoor Recreation Committee in Mayo for putting this plan together. It will ensure that we harness the huge potential for outdoor activities in Mayo in a planned and strategic manner.”
Chief Executive of Mayo County Council, Kevin Kelly stated: “This new Outdoor Recreation Plan provides a clear framework for the coordinated management and sustainable development of outdoor recreation in Mayo for the years ahead.
“As a rural county, ensuring that sustainable development reaches every corner of Mayo is of the utmost importance. This plan represents another significant tool in helping us achieve that ambition.”
The plan was developed in consultation with outdoor recreation stakeholders around the county. The establishment of a County Outdoor Recreation Committee of the key stakeholders and decision-makers in the county will help to ensure that there is a co-ordinated and collaborative approach to the development, management and promotion of outdoor recreation in Mayo. The role of the County Outdoor Recreation Committee in carrying out the actions outlined in the plan will be key to its successful implementation.
As more and more people participate in outdoor activities, this plan aims to ensure that this is done sustainably and in a responsible manner. As a Sustainable Development Goal Champion, this is very important for Mayo County Council and the county as a whole. This plan recognises the crucial role that the Mayo Sports Partnership plays as a catalyst for driving participation in outdoor recreation and ensuring that everyone has the opportunity to connect with and enjoy Mayo’s diverse, natural landscapes.
Also speaking at the launch was Cathaoirleach of the Ballina Municipal District, Councillor Jarlath Munnelly who said: “Our great outdoors offers an extraordinary range of recreational opportunities for people of all ages and abilities. Every person who walks a trail, cycles a greenway, or paddles along our rivers experiences the enormous benefits that nature brings to health and wellbeing.”
Lyndon Jones, Chairperson Mayo Sports Partnership added: "This plan is a game changer for Mayo, providing a roadmap to ensure our incredible natural landscapes are inclusive and accessible for everyone. By supporting local volunteers and removing barriers to participation, we are making our county a national leader for health, wellness, and sustainable adventure."
The plan was funded by the Department of Rural and Community Development and the Gaeltacht. The pilot Outdoor Recreation Officer programme is managed by Sport Ireland.
Mayo was selected as one of only six counties nationwide to participate in a pilot programme employing a dedicated Outdoor Recreation Officer. This role, currently held by Kieran Reilly, is central to the operation of the County Outdoor Recreation Committee (CORC), which will oversee the implementation and progress of the plan's actions.
While part of the Mayo Sports Partnership team, Kieran is a vital point of contact for the implementation of the plan and can be contacted by emailing kreilly@mayococo.ie
