Vibrant Mayo traditional music summer school launches 2026 programme
WESTPORT Scoil Cheoil continues to build on its reputation as one of Ireland’s best-known and most vibrant traditional music summer schools.
The 2026 programme will run from July 13 to 17 in Scoil Phádraig, Westport, with formal classes each morning from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., followed by a rich programme of evening sessions and concerts for participants throughout the week.
A highlight of the programme is the renowned tutor concert on Wednesday, July 15, sponsored by Knockranny House Hotel, which promises an outstanding showcase of traditional music at the highest level.
The week concludes with a special participant concert on Friday morning, where students perform for family and friends, celebrating the skills and repertoire developed over the course of the programme.
Classes are offered across a wide range of instruments and levels. Tin whistle is available at beginner, intermediate, and advanced levels. Bodhrán and guitar are offered at beginner and combined intermediate/advanced levels. All other instruments - including fiddle, button accordion, concertina, flute, harp, banjo, and mandolin - are available at intermediate and advanced levels. Additional classes include singing, dance, and piano/harp accompaniment.
The highly popular Kinder Irish Music Camp, catering for children aged 4-5, includes sean-nós dance, song, and beginner tin whistle, and continues to be a highlight for younger participants.
Demand for 2026 has been exceptionally strong, with many classes already nearing capacity. As places are strictly limited, early booking is strongly advised to avoid disappointment.
Westport Scoil Cheoil is recognised by the Department of Education as Continuing Professional Development (CPD) for primary school teachers, with EPV days awarded, making it an ideal event for both families and educators. Whether beginner or advanced, young or adult, participants are guaranteed an immersive and enriching musical experience.
