Pope Leo XIV

A Mayo View: Credit to Pope Leo for filling void of dreadful world political leadership

At a time when the world is in dire need of leadership and words of wisdom, Pope Leo XIV has stepped forward.

What a welcome intervention it was to hear the world leader of the Catholic Church stating the 'world is being ravaged by a handful of tyrants'.

The Pontiff was also highly critical of the many political leaders who have failed miserably to stand up to such people as Trump and Netanyahu in his apt reference to the out-of-control few being held together 'by a multitude of supportive brothers and sisters'.

His remarks were a timely reminder that sanity and reason still exist in some powerful corners of the globe and hopefully they will gather further traction by encouraging a unified international condemnation of such tyrants.

Few expected Pope Leo XIV to hit back after being taunted by Trump for his castigation of the US-Israel war on Iran.

But he did so with incisiveness and skill.

“Woe to those who manipulate religion and the very name of God for their own military, economic and political gain, dragging that which is sacred into darkness and filth.

“They turn a blind eye to the fact that billions of dollars are spent on killing and devastation, yet the resources needed for healing, education and restoration are nowhere to be found."

While the Pope insisted that he does not see his role as a politician, he certainly filled a void that cowardly government leaders had left wide open.

“I continue to speak strongly against war, seeking to promote peace, dialogue and multilateralism among states to find solutions to problems,” he outlined.

He does not fear Trump or Netanyahu.

And he has inspired others to do the same.

The position of our own government, for instance, has been very disappointing and there has been very little condemnation from the floor of Dáil Éireann.

Because the two tyrants have been allowed to run amok, this country is now facing the prospect of inflation and a cost-of-living crisis.

Ireland cannot continue to bend the knee to Trump's warmongering and generally obnoxious agenda.

We've already seen signs that this approach, or the consequences of it, is beginning to erode the foundations of our traditional political establishment.

A crossroads has been reached.
