Mayo businessman raises €10,000 for children with cancer
PARAIC Horkan, director of Horkans Group and owner of Horkans, Castlebar, has raised €10,000 for Cancer Fund for Children, a charity that provides emotional, social and therapeutic support to children, young people and families impacted by cancer across the island of Ireland.
Cancer Fund for Children are currently building a therapeutic short break centre, Daisy Lodge, on the shores of Lough Corrib in Cong. Motivated by this project Paraic sold a special Daisy Lodge daisy plant and donated the money raised to help Cancer Fund for Children ensure no child faces cancer alone.
Known for being easy to grow and flowering from June to October, this initiative allowed shoppers to bring a part of Daisy Lodge into their home, while making a difference to children with cancer.
As well as this initiative, Paraic will be joining a team of 69 cyclists from May 8 to 9 and tackling a 300km route from Dublin to Westport to raise money for the charity. Led by New Beginning Cycling Club, this is the second year of this charity event which raised €67,000 in 2025.
Speaking on this, Paraic said: “I can’t wait to take on the Dublin to Westport cycle for the second year in a row in aid of this incredible charity. The funds raised will help Cancer Fund for Children’s Daisy Lodge provide restorative short breaks to children and their families from across the island of Ireland.
“We hope to build on the success of last year and continue to make a positive impact. We want to thank everyone for their support so far. It means so much.”
Every week across the island of Ireland, approximately 10 children and young people (aged 0-24) are diagnosed with cancer. Cancer Fund for Children provides vital support in the family home, in hospital and at the charity’s short break centre, Daisy Lodge, to ensure these children and their families, don’t face their experience alone.
