Plans for second Mayo cemetery Columbarium approved

PLANNING has been approved for a columbarium wall facility at the new cemetery in Castlebar.

The proposed new addition at the cemetery, to host cremated remains, came before local councillors by way of a Part 8 planning application.

It will be the second such facility in the county.

In an update on cemeteries, members were told a number of sites are being looked at in Islandeady to provide for additional burial grounds there.

The cemetery is near capacity and local elected representatives have voiced the concerns of families about space running out.

Municipal head Ann Moore, in an update, said a number of sites are being looked at.

It is planned to meet with the local community group as well to tie down a suitable site.
