Woman accused of stealing from Mayo hospital patients returned for trial

A BALLYCROY woman accused of stealing more than €3,000 from patients at Mayo University Hospital is to face trial at Castlebar Circuit Criminal Court this summer.

Helen Deane (41), Knockmoyleen, Ballycroy, faces five counts of theft from patients at the hospital during 2025.

She is accused of stealing €1,220 in cash from a patient on April 14, and €289 from another patient on June 2. On July 8, she allegedly stole a handbag valued at €60 and €40 in cash.

On August 6, she is accused of stealing €250 from a patient in the hospital's emergency department, and between August 14 and 15 she allegedly stole a further €1,300 in cash.

Garda Evan Joyce gave evidence that he had served Deane with the book of evidence ahead of last Wednesday's sitting at Castlebar District Court.

Louise Cresham, State Solicitor for County Mayo, appearing for the Director of Public Prosecutions, applied to have Deane returned for trial at Castlebar Circuit Criminal Court on June 29.

Judge Vincent Deane approved the application and granted free legal aid following the submission of a statement of means by defence solicitor Eanya Egan, with no State objection.

Deane was remanded on continuing bail subject to her existing conditions.
