'Excellent' bathing water standards at Mayo beaches

MAYO'S beaches are reporting excellent standards, according to the latest EPA report on bathing water quality in Ireland.

Excellent water quality was recorded at Bertra, Westport, Carrowniskey and Old Head, Louisburgh, Clare Island, Dooega, Dugort, Golden Strand, Keel and Keem in Achill, Elly Bay, Mullaghroe, Rinroe Beach, Belmullet, Mulranny Beach, and Ross Beach in Killala.

One beach - Carrowmore, Louisburgh - fell below the standard and was classified 'Sufficient'.

Belmullet Tidal Pool was one of two new bathing waters officially identified in 2025. The pool requires at least one more season of sampling before classification can be assigned to it.

High bathing water quality was maintained in 2025, despite increased pressure from heavy rainfall. Some 78 per cent of sites have 'Excellent’ water quality while 98 per cent meet or exceed the minimum standard of ‘Sufficient’.
